(KNSI) – A man has died after falling from a boat on a northern Minnesota lake.

First responders were called to Otter Tail Lake around 2:30 on Saturday afternoon. The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office says 63-year-old David Kantrud was on a pontoon boat with his family when he fell into the water while trying to get an item.

Other boaters rushed to the scene and helped pull Kantrud’s from the water. He was unconscious. Within minutes, OTC’s water patrol arrived, assisted with CPR, and used an automatic electric defibrillator as the pontoon raced to shore.

Resuscitation efforts continued, but the Fergus Falls man was declared dead at the scene. Investigators say Kantrud wasn’t wearing a life jacket a the time of the incident.
