(KNSI) – The goats are back in town.
For the second year, a small army of plant eaters has been deployed to Quarry Park and Nature Preserve to attack buckthorn. The goats graze on the invasive species, providing a unique and natural approach to controlling the plant.
They’re now frolicking at a fenced-in area between Quarry 11 and Quarry 8. The animals’ activities are part of an effort to restore 90 acres of the park’s forest, wetland, and rock outcrops.
Buckthorn outcompetes native plants and can harm wildlife habitats. It can also contribute to erosion by shading plants that help hold soil in place.
