(KNSI) – The St. Cloud VA has scheduled a summit on August 15th to bring mental health issues to the forefront.

Director of the Mental Health Integrated Clinical Community, Jeremy Maursted, spoke with KNSI about the event. Maursted says the topics covered will provide valuable information for veterans and residents alike.

“We’re really trying to focus on those things that we all consider very challenging, and hope to not only help our veterans in the community but also have that generalized to the general population as well.”

PTSD and substance use are two of the issues that will be discussed. Maursted says the VA has gotten very good at treating trauma-related mental health disorders, including depression. He says a couple of therapies are effective to the point that they could almost be considered cures.

Criminal justice reform is also on the agenda. Maursted says, “We’re also going to focus on some really difficult things, such as justice-involved veterans or people in general who interact with the justice or the legal system, and what’s the right thing to do with them. How do we divert them from the legal system into treatment instead of being housed in jails?”

The event is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 75 South 37th Avenue, in St. Cloud.
