(KNSI) — The St. Cloud Area Planning Organization (APO) is inviting residents and commuters to participate in a new initiative aimed at making streets safer for all users, regardless of their mode of transportation.
Whether people drive, walk, bike, or use a wheelchair, the APO wants to hear about experiences and suggestions for improving safety in the St. Cloud metro area. The study area includes the cities of Sartell, Sauk Rapids, St. Cloud, St. Joseph, and Waite Park.
According to the plan, the St. Cloud metro area is growing faster than the state population and is younger than the state average. The five cities are home to over 4,500 businesses employing over 84,500 people.
Residents in the area have diverse transportation needs, with:
7% of households do not own a car
77% of people drive to work alone, and 8% carpool
5% of people walk to work
2% of people use public transportation
Less than 1% bike to work
The project, part of the Safe Streets for All program, is focused on reducing the risk and severity of crashes throughout the region. It aims to gather insights from the community to help shape future transportation plans and infrastructure improvements that cater to everyone. The survey seeks to understand the community’s concerns, experiences, and ideas for making the streets safer. The interactive map allows users to pinpoint specific locations where they have experienced safety issues or have suggestions for improvement.
The study is in its first phase, with public engagement and data analysis. Phase two starts next month, as officials seek feedback on proposed improvements and safety projects. Phase three starts in December and goes through March 2025, as the plan is finalized and adopted.
Residents can participate in the project by completing a survey or contributing to an interactive map available online.
