(KNSI) – This year’s annual butterfly release at the Munsinger and Clemens Gardens in St. Cloud is coming up on Sunday.
The event benefits Quiet Oaks Hospice House. Executive Director Linda Allen says, “The total will amass about 600 butterflies, and they’re all monarchs. They were grown by a butterfly farmer here in Isanti, Minnesota.”
Allen explains the symbolism behind the release.
“Butterflies, I think, as a whole, signify hope. The butterfly event has always been held in memory of those who’ve passed on. For loved ones who have gone before us, it’s just a wonderful way that we come together as a community to remember them.”
Allen says she isn’t sure if anyone has been to all 13 events, but several guests have made it a tradition to help honor their family members. Not everyone who attends has a tie to Quiet Oaks. Allen says the powerful message is understood by everyone, as grief and loss are universal.
Staff at Quiet Oaks Hospice will make a roughly 40-mile trip on Sunday to pick up precious cargo. Tucked away in individual pouches and kept in a dormant state, the butterflies will be handed out to attendees at Munsinger and Clemens Gardens just before 2:00 p.m. Allen says some buyers choose to release their butterflies at other locations, like cemeteries or area spots that hold special significance for them.
In addition to the butterfly release, the botanical society is putting on a concert as part of its “Music in the Gardens” series. The group “Monday Night Jazz” is playing.
All proceeds will go towards covering operating expenses.
