(KNSI) — There’s still time to snag a spot in a special Minnesota Department of Natural Resources youth deer hunt in various state parks this fall.

Firearms hunts are open to youth ages 12 to 15 but must be accompanied by an adult.

There is a youth archery hunt at Sand Prairie Wildlife Management Area in Sherburne County for kids ages ten to 17 and another at Camp Ripley for those ages 12 to 17. These differ from the statewide youth firearms season which runs October 10th through the 17th.

The DNR says that while nontoxic ammo is usually required for special state park hunts, an exception applies to these youth hunts in designated shotgun areas. They say to remember to completely remove all deer parts, including entrails, from the field. Where nontoxic ammunition is required, bullets, slugs, muzzleloader ammunition and other single projectiles must be made entirely of nontoxic material approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. For deer hunting, this typically means copper ammunition.

The deadline to apply is August 16th. Those looking to participate can apply online, via phone or in person at a DNR license sales agent.
