(KNSI) – It was a busy weekend on the sun’s surface, paving the way for a potential Northern Lights show across Minnesota late Tuesday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center says solar flares began to erupt with regularity on Saturday and Sunday. It takes time, but that energy has now reached the outer edges of our atmosphere.

The earth naturally pushes that juice towards the poles, a planetary defense system that turns into an active aurora borealis display that dances down as far south as Illinois. Conditions exist for the Northern Lights to appear to the naked eye here in central Minnesota.

The forecast is for partly cloudy skies. Since we are still in the heart of summer, sunrise is relatively late. The best chance to see the lights is from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Conditions are less favorable late Wednesday for a potential aurora borealis, but northern Minnesota would still stand a decent shot at witnessing some activity.
