(KNSI) — With election season kicking into high gear, Stearns County has a message for those who display signs for their candidates: Keep them off the highway right of way.

Highway rights of way typically include the driving lanes, inside and outside shoulders, ditches and sight corners at intersections. Violation of the law is a misdemeanor. County officials say civil penalties may also apply if the placement of such material contributes to a motor vehicle crash that injures a person or damages a motor vehicle that runs off the road.

In addition, campaign signs may not be placed on private property outside the right-of-way limits without landowner consent. Any sign found illegally placed will be removed and impounded at the county garage for 30 days. During that time, the owners may come to claim the signs. County staff may throw the signs away if they are not claimed after thirty days.

The primary election is set for August 13th. The general election is on November 5th.
