(KNSI) – CenterPoint Energy says it will spend over $100 million to implement several pilot programs over the next five years to help make natural gas usage cleaner.

The utility submitted the plan because of a 2021 state energy law that mandates companies to push innovative technologies to reduce fossil fuel emissions. CenterPoint serves 920,000 homes and businesses in the state, making it the largest natural gas provider.

The business expects the innovation plan will reduce carbon pollution by 1.2 million tons over the projects’ lifetimes, roughly the amount of emissions created from powering 150,000 homes. It also estimates 3,000 full-time jobs will be created. Approximately $17 million in federal incentives help offset the cost of the initiative.

The rest will be covered by a $1.50 bump to your monthly utility bill.
