(KNSI) – Royalty visits St. Cloud.

Miss Minnesota Emily Schumacher was at Territory Golf Club on Monday for a golf scramble benefitting Advocates For Health. Schumacher hopes to be a doctor one day and she is stressing heart health through CPR training and AED accessibility as her community service initiative.

Advocates for Health works to install automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, at public places throughout the area. They help save lives during sudden cardiac arrest. Schumacher says heart issues run in her family, and she uses that as inspiration.

Schumacher has been busy since she was handed the crown on June 21st. She tells KNSI News, “I did over 27 appearances, 4000 miles traveled, so I definitely didn’t have time to catch up on my sleep. And I was really just kind of thrown in and have been traveling across the state of Minnesota, meeting people, going to parades, doing events like here with Advocates For Health at golf tournaments.”

Schumacher is from southern Minnesota and enjoys seeing parts of the state she isn’t familiar with. She says being in Hinckley’s Fourth of July festivities was her first trip to the community, about halfway between Duluth and St. Paul. Middle River is coming up soon, another first for Schumacher.

Her reign was a long time coming. She sighs with relief when recounting her path to the crown. “So, it took me five times to win Miss Minnesota, which is pretty unheard of. And it really was just a lot of resilience, hard work, determination, a little bit of heartbreak along the way, which really was kind of that driving force and really my why. Which is why I’m here today advocating for saving lives.”

She will need all of those qualities this year and beyond. In addition to her hectic schedule and work as a CNA at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Mankato, she is applying for medical school with the goal of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon.
