(KNSI) – The family of a man who died by suicide while being held in the Sherburne County Jail has reached a $1 million settlement.

According to court documents, 23-year-old Justice White died on April 21st, 2020, after he hanged himself 11 days earlier inside a segregated cell. The family sought compensation for the loss of life “due to the deliberate indifference of the defendants.”

According to the criminal complaint, White was indicted in U.S. District Court for an alleged rape on the Red Lake reservation in 2015. He was arrested in October 2019 and placed in the Sherburne County jail in December of that year. The facility is one of a handful in the state that houses federal detainees. Records show White had tried to kill himself before and was flagged as a suicide risk.

The complaint states guards conducted welfare checks from a catwalk, and there wasn’t a clear view of the cell.
