(KNSI) – Minnesota House Minority Leader Lisa Demuth (R-Cold Spring) issued a statement on the attempted assassination of GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump Saturday afternoon.

She says, “I’m praying for President Trump and all of the attendees of the rally today in Pennsylvania, and extremely grateful for the heroic work of the Secret Service who moved quickly to eliminate the threat.

“The right to peacefully assemble is fundamental in our country, and this horrific act of violence is rightfully being condemned across the political spectrum. With at least one victim tragically killed, I hope the country can come together for a moment of prayer and unity as we process this horrific tragedy.”

Trump was speaking in Butler County, Pennsylvania, at a campaign rally less than two days before the start of the Republican National Convention. A man was able to access a roof outside the farm grounds where the event was taking place but within rifle range of the stage from which Trump was giving his address.

The shooter was able to get off several rounds. One grazed the ear of the former president. Another killed an attendee. The shooter was taken down by the counter sniper unit of the security detail.

Trump was taken to a hospital in Pittsburgh and has since been released.
