(KNSI) – Later this month, the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s three year long Interstate 94 Gap Project gets underway.

Crews will start the work on July 22nd to expand I-94 between Monticello and Albertville to six lanes—three in each direction—to improve traffic flow and safety on this busy stretch of highway.

Prep work will be the name of the game this year, as crews may implement temporary lane closures. MNDOT says that will mostly happen overnight to minimize disruption. In 2025, major construction starts but the freeway will remain open with two lanes in each direction as crews build the additional lanes on the other side. The work should wrap in late 2026.

Officials say the project will improve traffic flow, the road surface, capacity and safety by reducing bottlenecks and chokepoints.

Work includes:

Reconstructing the road surface
Adding a third westbound lane from Wright County Road 37 in Albertville to west of Highway 25 in Monticello
Adding a third eastbound lane from west of Highway 25 in Monticello to County Road 19 in Albertville
Replacing the westbound bridge over County Road 19 in Albertville
Widening the westbound bridge over County Road 75 in Monticello
Replacing or repairing underground drainage infrastructures
Installing two noise walls along I-94 in the Monticello area
