(KNSI) – St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis celebrated a milestone Monday, hosting his 1,000th town hall at Lake George near the paddle boat dock.

In addition to being a point of personal pride, the city has asked the Guinness Book of World Records to see if it is the most all-time. Kleis spoke live on-air with KNSI from the meeting, saying that staff is not aware of anyone anywhere with more.

“We did our application, so, you know, but we’ll find out. We didn’t find any record but there could be a record.”

Kleis has been mayor for 19 years and committed early on to weekly gatherings to hear from residents on their concerns. They have varied over the years in terms of format. At least a couple lasted for 24 hours straight.

He joked that the bar has been set high for his successor. “Come November, you’ll elect somebody, and I expect them to do at least 1,150.”

Six candidates are running to be the next mayor of St. Cloud. They will be whittled down to two in the primary election being held next month.
