(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will be prowling the lakes for boaters who exceed their limit over the holiday weekend.

Operation Dry Water anchors DNR safety enforcement efforts during the long Fourth of July weekend. DNR Lt. Eric Sullivan explained they’ll be on the water all over the state starting Thursday and continuing for the rest of the week. “Law enforcement will be out in full force and the penalties for boating under the influence are severe. They include hefty fines and possible jail time.”

Sullivan says don’t expect any mercy if you’re busted in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. “Minnesota boating while intoxicated laws are among the strongest in the nation. Operating a boat with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher is against the law. And anyone convicted of drinking and driving will lose their driving privileges.”

The DNR says drunk boating is the leading cause of boat crashes and fatalities on the water.

Besides leaving the booze behind, conservation officers ask boaters to be on the lookout for busy waterways and high water.
