(KNSI) – A shakeup behind the bench for the St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey Team.
Northern Michigan University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced Wednesday that Husky assistant Dave Shyiak had been hired as the school’s fourth-ever head coach. The Wildcats were one of the favorites to win their conference last season but disappointed on the ice. A wave of players hit the transfer portal this offseason and the chaos eventually led Grant Potulny to step down earlier this month.
Shyiak was an assistant with Western Michigan before arriving at SCSU. He has prior head coaching experience at Alaska Anchorage. Shyiak’s ties to NMU run deep. He was a captain on the Wildcats’ 1991 national title squad and was on the staff at the school from 1995 to 2005.
He came to SCSU when Brett Larson was named head coach and played a part in the Huskies’ unprecedented success in the last five years. In 2020-21, the program reached its first-ever NCAA National Championship Game.
