(KNSI) – A prosecutor says a Wright County Deputy’s use of deadly force was justified after a man came at him with a pipe.

On March 2nd, a deputy tried to pull over Jeffery Chapman for erratic driving in St. Michael. The 67-year-old Albertville man traveled about two blocks before stopping.

Chapman then got out of the vehicle, pulled an object that the deputy believed was a knife from his waist and began marching towards Feenstra. As the deputy backed up, Chapman refused to listen to orders to stop and drop the weapon. The deputy then fired his gun, hitting Chapman multiple times. He died at the scene. Investigators found a nine-inch metal pipe next to him.

The Wright County Attorney’s office says, “No criminal charges will be filed as the use of deadly force and the shooting was authorized and justified statutorily based upon the circumstances of this incident.”

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Force Investigation Unit looked into the shooting.
