(KNSI) — Wednesday marks Juneteenth, the holiday recognizing the end of slavery in the U.S.

It is a holiday for the federal government, and last year, Governor Tim Walz signed a law making it an official state holiday.

Most banks and the stock market are closed in observance, as are federal, state, county and city offices. Some services can still be accessed online. Parking downtown St. Cloud will be free, but St. Cloud will continue garbage pickup. There is no regular mail delivery, but priority packages will still be delivered.

Most stores will remain open.

Juneteenth is celebrated to honor the day in 1865 when the last of the slaves in the U.S. learned they were free.
