(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Crush Varsity Baseball Team pushed the number one overall seed to the limit in Thursday’s Class AAAA quarterfinal at CHS Field in St. Paul.

Wayzata came into the game 24-0 and a prohibitive favorite to win the championship, but were forced to sneak away with a nerve-wracking 6-5 victory. St. Cloud led as late as the fourth inning and came up just short in the top of the 7th, leaving the tying run only 90 feet away.

First baseman Drew Lieser scored twice and drove in two runs. Rightfielder Jackson Scheetz led the Crush in hits with a pair.

With their last at bats, St. Cloud saw Joe Hess lead off with a double to right-center. He scored thanks to a double from Parker Schulz. Schulz was advanced to third with two outs. He was stranded there as the final batter struck out.

The Crush move down into the consolation bracket. Their thrilling season will continue Friday at 11:30 a.m. The team has a record of 19-6.
