(KNSI) — Divers conducting an inspection in Thunder Bay discovered a significant 13-foot crack in the hull of the freighter Michipicoten.

This comes after the ship started taking on water in Lake Superior over the weekend. The Coast Guard received reports about 7:00 Saturday morning that Michipicoten may have collided with something under the surface in the northwest section of the lake near Isle Royale. The water in that area is around 700 feet deep. Roughly half of the crew was evacuated for safety. Pumps immediately began displacing the water reducing the list from 15 degrees to five degrees before she limped into Thunder Bay with assistance.

According to TBnewswatch, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada said the crack appears to be a structural failure. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the issue originated at the bilge, where the side of the ship meets the bottom.

The crew reportedly heard a loud bang while on the open water, which investigators believe coincides with the time of the hull breach.

The Michipicoten is currently docked at Keefer Terminal while the extent of the damage is assessed.
