(KNSI) — The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after it responded to a serious injury resulting from recreational firearms use.
At around 9:30 Saturday night, witnesses told police a bystander was injured while another person was shooting a rifle at some Tannerite in a field in Maywood Township. Investigators say one of the 12 people gathered in a field placed a “substantial quantity of Tannerite” downrange and placed a metal barrel over the top of it about 150 feet from the crowd. One person fired a rifle through the barrel and into the Tannerite, causing it to explode. The barrel ruptured, sending pieces of shrapnel in all directions, with one piece hitting 26-year-old Collin Louis Schumacher in the abdomen.
Schumacher received first aid at the scene before authorities arrived. He was later airlifted to North Memorial Hospital for treatment.
No other injuries or property damage were reported. The investigation remains ongoing.
