(KNSI)—A Minnesota senator is leaving her seat to run for Congress, potentially changing the balance of power in the legislature.

Democrat Kelly Morrison announced her intention to challenge incumbent congressman, former Presidential candidate, and fellow Democrat Dean Phillips in the 3rd District. Morrison resigned her seat, which has ended the DFL majority in the chamber. The Senate is temporarily deadlocked with Republicans at 33 seats each. The legislature has adjourned for the year, but if a special session is called for any reason, there would be equal power in the Senate.

Minnesota senators serve a four-year term, meaning they won’t vote for local Senate seats in November. However, Governor Tim Walz has called for a special election to fill on November 5th. If necessary, a special primary vote will be held on August 13th. Candidates have until June 11th to file.
