(KNSI) – The start of boating season is almost here, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is committed to making it safe.

Minnesota’s lakes and rivers have been busier than ever with anglers, paddlers, and recreational boaters. DNR Marine Unit Supervisor Lt. Eric Sullivan expects the state’s waterways will remain that way for the next few days. “With Memorial Day weekend coming up, we’ve got busy water on the weekend coming up, and as we progress into the summer, we want to make sure that we’re focusing on water safety to prevent tragedies.”

Sullivan has three tips to ensure you return to the dock in good health. “The first one would just be life jackets. Make sure that we have them on board the watercraft that we’re on and having them on. The second one is patience. Patience at the access as well as out on the water with other users. And then, the third would be, just leave the alcohol on shore so you don’t have to worry about any impairment and make sure you have a safe day on the water.”

Experts also say to check safety equipment and make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguisher, navigation lights, and the boat horn is in good condition. The DNR reminds people to be aware of potentially high water, which can present safety risks by hiding hazards beneath the surface. And last but not least, control your wake. Large wakes can erode the shoreline.
