(KNSI) — At Monday’s work session, the St. Cloud City Council reviewed a recently completed housing study that breaks down the region’s demographics and helps predict the community’s housing needs in the future.
After the meeting, KNSI News spoke with Community Development Director Matt Glaesman, who explained the study shows the area needs “17,000 [homes] which is a massive number by 2040. But when we break it down, annual rate of construction, it really is in some cases, single family detached product, very similar to what we’ve been doing. So, it’s a question of how do we sustain that pace.”
Staff says adding more housing will make entry-level homes more affordable, which leads to more personal wealth.
In 2019, the region was looking at needing 7,000 more places for people to live. The city puts the report together every five years. The document will be a factor in daily decision-making when approving apartment and housing projects moving forward.
