(KNSI) – Sunday was seventh heaven for Minnesota hoops fans.

The Timberwolves clinched a spot in the National Basketball Association Western Conference Finals with a 98-90 victory over the Denver Nuggets. The team charged from behind in historic fashion, tying the 2004 squad for the deepest playoff run in franchise history.

The T-Wolves were on the road and found themselves down 58-38 early in the third quarter. Star Anthony Edwards had been kept in check all game, and nothing was going right as both Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray had the defending champs looking like they were about to blow out Minnesota.

Prior to Sunday night, the biggest deficit ever overcome at halftime of a deciding Game Seven in league history was 11 points, pulled off twice by the Golden State Warriors. A 33-9 run in the third changed everything.

Denver’s dynamic duo was countered by sterling play from Jaden McDaniels and Karl-Anthony Towns. Both Timberwolves players had 23 points on a combined 15-24 shooting and 12-13 at the charity stripe. Towns was hit with a fifth personal foul with about four minutes left in the last quarter, which forced him to the bench.

In came Naz Reid. The Sixth Man of the Year played a pivotal role in keeping Minnesota ahead late, scoring big buckets and grabbing a ton of offensive rebounds to extend possessions.

Edwards eventually scored 16 points, but he shot only 25% from the floor. Minnesota had six players in double figures.

The conference finals begin Wednesday at Target Center in Minneapolis. The Wolves will try to corral the Dallas Mavericks in another best-of-seven series. The winner advances to the NBA Finals. Minnesota has never reached the championship round.

Tickets go on sale Monday. The Wolves are guaranteed two home games with two more possible. Game Two is Friday, May 24th.
