(KNSI) – The St. Joseph American Legion will honor over 600 veterans in a series of Memorial Day ceremonies.

On Monday, Legionnaires, members of the auxiliary, and the local Sons of the American Legion will begin a march to St. Joseph Catholic Church at 8:45 a.m. The service is scheduled for 15 minutes later.

Ceremonies then move outdoors. Veterans buried on foreign soil, in national cemeteries, and local graveyards are honored with the reading of their name followed by the tolling of a bell. Each service ends with a firing squad salute and the playing of taps.

After the first gathering at Old Cemetery, there will be a social hour and refreshments at the St. Joseph American Legion Club. The group will also visit St. John’s Abbey Cemetery at 11:15 a.m. and the Yankee Cemetery just south of the city at noon.

The events are open to the public.
