(KNSI) — If you see a large police presence around Apollo High School in St. Cloud, don’t be alarmed. It’s only a drill.

Between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. today, the St. Cloud Police Department and District 742 are teaming up to create a mock crash to highlight the importance of safe driving during prom and graduation season. This year’s theme will be the deadly consequences of distracted driving.

According to state law, it is illegal for drivers under age 18 to use a cell phone, whether hand-held or hands-free — except to call 911 in an emergency. It is illegal for all drivers of all ages to compose, read, or send electronic messages or emails or access the Internet on a wireless device when the vehicle is in motion or part of traffic. This includes being stopped in traffic or at a light. It does not apply to devices that are permanently attached to a vehicle or GPS systems.

Firefighters, Mayo Ambulance, the Minnesota State Patrol and LifeLink will be assisting the St. Cloud Police Department at the scene.
