(KNSI) — Drivers traveling on Highway 23 between Milaca and Ogilvie will encounter detours and lane closures starting this week for a major road resurfacing project.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation will spend $6.5 million to repave 12 miles of highway, including shoulders, drainage systems, and access points.

Construction will take place in two stages. Crews will prepare the work zone and set up detours starting this week.

From May 20th to late June, Highway 23 will be completely closed between Mille Lacs County Road 24 and Highway 47 in Ogilvie. Traffic will be detoured north via county roads.

Local traffic will still be able to access businesses and residences along the route, but should expect delays and use alternate entrances if possible. There will be temporary closures to replace bridges.

The section between Milaca and Bock will remain open until early July when work will begin on that segment.

Officials recommend allowing extra time for traveling through the area. The project is expected to be completed by late September.
