(KNSI) – The United States Postal Inspector and the FBI are again asking for help finding the fiend behind the fatal bombing of the Kimball Post Office 48 years ago.
On May 13th, 1976, around 6:30 a.m., the small town was rocked by an explosion that killed Assistant Postmaster Iven Olgar Holen. He was getting ready to open up for the day when a bomb placed in a tackle box went off. The father of ten was the only person in the office. Investigators believed the box was supposed to explode when opened by its intended target and was likely jarred, leading to the premature explosion. It was addressed to a home just north of town. The FBI says it was assembled and mailed by someone from the Kimball area.
The blast caused Holen to be thrown through the vestibule. The 60-year-old man died while en route to St. Cloud Hospital.
The US Postal Inspection Service may pay a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible. The original award of $3,000 was increased to $10,000 shortly after the investigation began. In May 1977, postal authorities increased the reward to $50,000. In May 2016, during the 40th anniversary of the case, the reward was doubled to $100,000.
