(KNSI)—At first, it was Sherburne County, but now the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office is warning about a scam targeting some of the area’s most vulnerable.

An alleged contractor has been soliciting door-to-door for blacktop projects. The group then does shoddy, poor-quality work or leaves the project undone. Several residents have complained that the men intimidate them into paying more than what had been verbally agreed upon.

Officials say there are some steps you can take to protect yourself. First, get a signed quote for a project and avoid paying until the work has been completed in full. They also remind you to properly vet anyone who shows up unannounced to offer a service.

The sheriff’s office did not provide the name of the individual or company committing the scam.

If any gets approached like this, don’t hesitate to call law enforcement.

In late April, the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office issued an identical warning.
