(KNSI) – When you think Prince, you think “Purple Rain.” And when you think “Purple Rain,” you think of one outfit in particular.

The costume is on display at the Minnesota History Center inside the Gale Family Library on the second floor until July 27th. It is viewable Thursday through Saturday each week. The ensemble has been in the possession of the Minnesota Historical Society since 1987. The organization’s extensive collection includes promotional photos, instruments, and LPs.

The exhibit is part of 40th anniversary events for the iconic film, which span the twin cities where the actor and musician called home. Paisley Park, Prince’s estate, is planning a series of concerts, memorabilia displays, and panels to celebrate the “Purple Rain” milestone.

The rock musical was shot almost entirely in Minneapolis. It grossed over $70 million worldwide, roughly 10x its budget.

The plot focuses on Prince’s character, The Kid. He is the frontman of several house bands at the First Avenue nightclub. The Kid has to navigate drama among the supporting musicians and an abusive home life. The Kid learns his father, also a gifted musician, had many old compositions stored in the basement of his home. They inspire him to write the song “Purple Rain.”
