(KNSI) – Minnesota anglers eager for the season kick-off on Saturday, May 11th, can get a head start with regional fishing outlooks provided by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The outlooks detail fishing opportunities and conditions across the state, breaking down specific information for lakes, rivers, and streams.

“An early ice out and healthy walleye populations in many lakes bode well for the season,” said DNR fisheries section manager Brad Parsons. “We expect excellent walleye fishing, but there’s plenty more to discover. If the walleye aren’t biting, try your luck with other species!”

Parsons suggests exploring back bays for abundant bluegill, northern pike and crappie. Northern also like to hang out in shallow, weedy areas like bass, but bass are catch and release only for now. Bass season opens on May 25th.
