(KNSI) – A Sartell K9 officer is bringing home some hardware for helping to transform how police work is done in the community.

Officer Kari Bonfield and her four-legged partner Kimber were given the 2023 Community Service Award from the Minnesota Association of Women Police on Monday afternoon.

According to the MAWP, Bonfield and Kimber have taken the therapy dog program to new heights. They’ve excelled at de-escalating people in crisis, responding to mental health calls, breaking down barriers for children who need to be interviewed by police in disturbing situations and calming a tense standoff situation with our at-risk school students.

The MAWP says the partner’s consistent positive engagement with the community makes her an invaluable resource to the department. Bonfield herself has become a role model for many young girls in the area.
