(KNSI) – The St. Cloud City Engineer’s Office has begun its Highbanks Ravine rehabilitation project.

4th Street South is closed between 1st Avenue South and 3rd Avenue South until further notice. Roughly 150 feet of 3rd Avenue South will also be shut down. Detours are posted.

Residents in the area will have access to their homes but may be required to use an alternative entrance depending on where the project crews are at in the project.

The goal of the effort is to curb erosion on the side slopes of the ravine. Officials are concerned about safety and water quality issues related to the crumbling of the banks. There are also wildlife threats, as a large cave complex in the area is used by bats.

The ravine has traditionally been used as an outflow from Lake George to the Mississippi River. The project intends to reroute that discharge to a storm drain pipe along 3rd Avenue South, which would empty farther south.
