(KNSI) — The St. Cloud Police Department is cracking down on drivers who run red lights.

A traffic safety initiative aimed at stopping red light runners resulted in officers writing 16 tickets in two days this week. Authorities say focused enforcement will continue as red light violations are dangerous and can cause serious crashes. They are asking drivers to please slow down and follow traffic signals.

According to its most recent statistics, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says 1,109 people were killed in crashes involving a driver who ran a red light. The IIHS is pushing for automated enforcement, such as cameras to capture and ticket red light runners. However, the Minnesota Supreme Court declared those cameras unconstitutional and have since been outlawed.
