Royalton Man Killed In ATV Crash On Soo Line Trail

(KNSI) – A Royalton man was found dead at the scene of an ATV crash Wednesday along the Soo Line Trail.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office says deputies discovered the body of 21-year-old John Poppen of Royalton at about 6:45 p.m. He had been traveling west along a designated portion of the trail when the vehicle left the path and hit a tree. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful.

Poppen was not wearing a helmet when the crash happened about a mile west of Highway 10 in Bellevue Township. The sheriff’s office was supported by the Minnesota State Patrol, North Air Care, Royalton Police, Royalton Fire and Rescue, and Mayo Clinic Ambulance.

Sheriff Shawn Larsen says that although the outcome was tragic, he was proud of the quick response and the professional effort of all involved in trying to save Poppen.
