(KNSI) — St. Cloud State University President Robbyn Wacker is stepping down early due to the school’s ongoing budget woes.

A letter from Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Chancellor Scott Olson was sent out to the school’s faculty and students. In it, Olson said SCSU is facing acute financial pressures that need to be addressed within weeks and believes someone else should be making decisions on long-term operational changes at the roughly 10,000-student institution.

Interim President-Designate Larry Dietz won’t be installed until July 1st, leaving a hole at the top during the budgeting process. Vice President for Finance and Administration Larry Lee will guide SCSU starting on Monday until Dietz takes over.

Olson says Wacker was instrumental in changing the university’s culture, deepening its ties with the St. Cloud community as a whole and devising the “It’s Time” reorganization strategy and believes she does care deeply about the school, but it’s time someone else leads the way.
