(KNSI) – Another week, another couple of inches of rain and central Minnesota looks back to normal in this week’s U.S. Drought Monitor report.

All of Benton, Sherburne, and Stearns Counties have seen even abnormally dry conditions wash away. The progress comes despite having little to no snowpack to melt off. Record December rains and now a soggy April have turned around what was a dire situation. During the harvest season last September, almost a third of Stearns County was in extreme drought. That figure was over 40% for Benton County.

The rains have persistently affected Rock County to Duluth, but parts of Minnesota are still struggling. About 10% of the state is in severe drought, from the headwaters of the Mississippi to Kittson County and Lake of the Woods. Roughly a quarter of the state remains in moderate drought, the first drought stage on a four-tier scale.

More rain is expected to fall in the coming days. The best chances are forecast for Monday night, when showers and thunderstorms are likely.
