(KNSI) – CentraCare-Rice Memorial Hospital and Willmar Lakeland Clinic have reached a major milestone in opening a medical school for future family physicians.
CentraCare and the University of Minnesota recently received clearance from the prestigious Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to launch their three-year rural family medicine residency program. The first cohort will begin in 2025. Fourth-year medical students will start being interviewed for a slot in the fall.
It marks the dawn of a new era in rural healthcare as the state’s only specialized program of its kind. Program Director Richard Wehseler called the accreditation a huge step to making the school a reality, “Up to this point, many things were theoretical, and while there have been several milestones on our path to develop this program, receiving accreditation is a big one.”
The program aims to train two students a year.
CentraCare-St. Cloud Hospital for a regional medical campus to train 24 doctors starting in 2025.
