(KNSI) — Minnesota’s Seventh District Congresswoman failed to get her party’s endorsement at the Republican convention over the weekend.
After three rounds of voting, Michelle Fischbach failed to get the 60% necessary to get the endorsement. Neither did anyone else, and the endorsement process ended after a motion to suspend the rules passed by more than the two-thirds necessary.
The failure to secure the party’s endorsement sets the stage for a high-stakes showdown in August. This contest will determine who will appear on the final ballot in November.
Challenger Steve Boyd called Fischbach’s lack of an endorsement a “victory” for his grassroots campaign and said, “It just goes to show that Americans are turning out to show they are fed up with the establishment in Washington.”
While Boyd didn’t win the endorsement either, in a statement on his website, he said, “Preventing a sitting Congresswoman from obtaining the GOP endorsement is a major accomplishment.” He also accuses the state GOP of leaving 37 delegates from Otter Tail County who had reportedly planned to vote for Boyd out of the convention and preventing them from casting a ballot. Additionally, he said the party is withholding delegate information from his team despite them voting to release it and handing over contact information to Fischbach.
