(KNSI) – Major construction is underway in downtown St. Cloud on the future site of the Great River Children’s Musuem, and there’s a way to stay up to date on the progress.

After nearly twelve years of planning, the nonprofit is in the final stages of bringing the project to life. Between now and the opening, the organization has launched a weekly online publication called Sunday Scoop to keep eager beavers informed on what’s happening at the site as they get closer to picking a grand opening date. The museum will likely welcome the public sometime in late 2024.

Last week, the drive-through canopy on the former Liberty Bank building came down to pave the way for outdoor exhibit space. The area will be a sensory experience filled with textured pathways, interactive sound installations, and native plantings. Officials say it’s the perfect place for hopping, jumping and getting the wiggles out.

The GRCM will be the second largest in Minnesota at 31,000 square feet and home to eight main exhibits.

The heart of the museum will be the Climber Clouds station, a unique feature where kids can reach for the sky and tower over the crowds. There are also plans for kids to learn about the mighty Mississippi in the Great Big River area, and there are designs for a space dedicated to the river’s origins in the Headwaters exhibit. There will also be program spaces, a teaching kitchen, a community room, a rooftop deck, and more.

The goal is to educate kids by letting them create, explore, discover, and be inspired through play. The activities will inspire kids on field trips and during outreach activities that will bring the museum’s programming to parks, festivals, schools, and other community venues.

The space will also unite people for co-learning, group gatherings, birthdays and corporate outings.
