(KNSI) – Minnesotans have their first chance to grab a gobbler this weekend.
The spring turkey hunts begin April 17th. The first three seasons to open are archery, youth and zone A. Chad Thesing, with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, encourages people to take this time to introduce a child to the outdoors. “It’s a good time to get the kids out. For a turkey hunt, it’s pretty simple in the fact that you sit in one spot, you make your calls, and they come to you.”
He says it can be comfortable if you get into the blind with a heater to keep away the morning chill. Thesing warns to be careful before pulling the trigger because turkeys tend to bunch up. “I get calls every year of people shooting two and sometimes three turkeys with one shot. So, know what you’re shooting at, and know what’s behind it. Therefore, if another turkey is behind the turkey you’re shooting at, now’s not the time to take that shot. Wait until they clear.”
Hunters are only allowed to take one bird each.
Officials stress the importance of safety. It should be the primary concern for all hunters, especially those using public land where others enjoying the outdoors may be present. The reminder is to ensure everyone is always aware of their surroundings.
Turkey tags are available over the counter anywhere hunting and fishing licenses are sold.
