(KNSI) — A new children’s book features one of Minnesota’s sports legends, and this week, it is looking to hit a home run for area charities.
On Friday, April 19th, Moose Lodge #1400 in Waite Park welcomes Joe Schmidt, who authored “The Right Thing To Do: The Joe Mauer Story”. The benefit runs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and money raised will go to Thumbs Up of Elk River, which is trying to end the stigma around mental health issues.
The INDY Foundation will also be helped. INDY stands for “I’m Not Done Yet.” It supports people battling cancer through a range of programs, from funding retreats at Grand View Lodge to emergency aid for gas and groceries.
The book is meant for ages four through eight and aims to help teach youngsters lessons like being kind and telling the truth. It also encourages them to chase their goals, even when others tell them it’s impossible.
It is based on Joe Mauer’s real-life story. The multi-sport high school star was a first-round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins and is part of this year’s Baseball Hall of Fame class.
