(KNSI) – An eclipse viewing event scheduled for Monday at Mississippi River County Park in Stearns County is canceled.
Heavy clouds will keep central Minnesota from getting a good glimpse of the rare phenomenon. The moon will rotate around the Earth today directly between us and the sun, creating a total eclipse.
It will cut through the country from Texas to Maine. The path of totality will be nearest Minnesota in southeast Missouri. That means we were never expected to see a complete blackout here in St. Cloud. Coverage would have peaked at just over 70% at about 2:00 p.m.
Unfortunately, astronomy lovers will be shut out for decades now that viewing has fizzled out this time around. The next eclipse to affect the continental United States won’t happen until 2044.
