(KNSI) — A Sartell High School student is recovering after accidentally overdosing on high-strength opioids on Thursday.

First responders were able to get the teenager Narcan to reverse the effects. The student was taken to a local hospital for treatment, where they were listed in stable condition. In a press release, officials say they believe the student bought the cartridge off the street and did not intend to inhale something laced with deadly narcotics.

Officials encourage parents to talk with their teens about the dangers of vape pens and e-cigarettes.

The Sartell Police Department says the incident highlights the importance of the School Resource Officer program and how it is necessary to keep kids safe. Sartell did not drop SROs from district facilities last year, finding a workaround to the ambiguity over the use-of-force law that legislators tackled early in this session in St. Paul.
