(KNSI) – The St. Cloud VA Medical Center has a unit dealing specifically with reducing stigma around substance abuse and improving treatment for veterans.
Psychiatrist Dr. Justin Hendricks says even if it is something you have been dealing with for decades and you think you might have a handle on, abuse of alcohol, illegal narcotics, and prescription drugs adds up over time.
“There’s consequences to that use that include financial, physical health, and just because you’ve been getting away with that for 20 years, doesn’t mean you’re going to be getting away with it for another 20 years.”
Hendricks recommends coordinating treatment between the VA and your primary care physician or a mental health specialist. He says even though the subject is tough, most of those who need help will get it.
Counselor Tracanne Legatt says successfully going through treatment is like lifting a weight off your shoulders. When you are hooked on something, it crowds out other parts of your life.
“Sometimes people will ask, “Well, how do I know if I’m having a problem with substance [use.]” Simply put, if the individual is experiencing some kind of problems in their areas of family relationships, careers, anywhere in the community or at home, that’s a problem.”
The unit also includes licensed practical nurse Laura Franti, and they are looking to add a medical special administrator.
