(KNSI) – Thursday is the 44th anniversary of one of the greatest sporting upsets in history.

National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum Chief Executive Officer Phil Sklar says few moments are remembered as well as the 1980 Olympic ice hockey semifinal win for Team USA over the Soviet Union.

“Al Michaels, “Do you believe in miracles?!” People remember where they were when they were watching that game. It’s one of those things, like the moon landing and OJ Simpson chase, you know exactly where you were when that happened.”

Celebrate the Miracle on Ice with your very own Herb Brooks bobblehead. It is a special-edition collectible being offered in conjunction with the Herb Brooks Foundation. It features the coach in his famous checkered suit from Lake Placid in 1980.

Brooks leading Team USA to the 1980 gold medal in an event hosted in upstate New York was the high point in a career mostly based in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. He played for the University of Minnesota and coached them to three national championships in the 1970s, winning in ’74 and ’76 against Michigan Tech and ’79 against North Dakota.

Later on in his career, he was instrumental in growing hockey at the collegiate level, including in St. Cloud. Sklar says Brooks was a giant whose legacy is bigger than ever.

“His legend continues to grow. Kids who are playing hockey now or watching hockey learn about Herb, whether it’s seeing his statue outside of the stadium where the Wild play or, watching the movie “Miracle” or seeing the replay of the 1980 Olympics.”

The Huskies play at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. In May 1986, Brooks surprised everyone when he took the job at then-Division III SCSU. The Huskies made the jump to the D1 powerhouse Western Collegiate Hockey Association after his one season behind the bench in St. Cloud.

Brooks died in a tragic car accident in 2003, just after he finished consulting on the Disney film ‘Miracle’ about the 1980 victory.

More information on ordering your Herb Brooks collectible Miracle on Ice bobblehead is here. Jack O’Callahan and a customizable 1980 player bobblehead are also being sold. Your order will ship in July.
