(KNSI) – For the first time ever, a Richardson will not sit as executive director of the St. Cloud Area July 4th Fireworks Committee.
Christina Buttenhoff will take over after the death of Tom Richardson. He had served in the role for 17 years, following in the footsteps of his father, Ed, who founded the event.
On July 4th, the skies over the Mississippi River are a canvas for one of the largest fireworks displays in the state. Buttenhoff says things will only get bigger as we near the 250th anniversary of American independence.
“We are ramping things up for 2024! It’s time to get excited about the fireworks; bring your family down for the day to play in the parks and check out the food trucks and activities.
“At dusk, watch one of the most spectacular fireworks shows in Minnesota. Meet up with old friends, make new friends, eat amazing food, and listen to music as we celebrate our nation’s birthday. We are currently working on securing contracts for food trucks, including new local trucks coming on board in 2024.
“Special plans are already in the works for America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, the Quarter Millennial.”
An estimated 40,000 people attend the show each year between Hester and Wilson Parks. New VIP seating is planned at both locations this year, which will go on sale soon.
Buttenhoff says her vision is only possible with the help of an all-volunteer staff and private financial donations. She moved to St. Cloud about two decades ago, has been a part of several area events, and met Tom Richardson as a volunteer at The Great Minnesota Airshow. She is also active with the St. Cloud March of Dimes chapter.
This year is the 78th anniversary of the fireworks display.
