(KNSI) – Democratic incumbent U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar has a new challenger for her seat.

Navy veteran Joe Fraser announced this week that he will seek the Republican nomination for November’s general election. Fraser says public service is a natural fit following his military career. He talked to KNSI Radio about the opportunities he had as an officer.

“I got my commission as an intelligence officer. Worked my way up through the ranks from an ensign, retiring as a senior commander after 26 years. It was a great time. I served overseas in Japan, Germany, Italy.”

He says he is focusing his campaign on fiscal issues, saying Klobuchar promised decades ago to focus on helping the average American make ends meet. Fraser says she and her colleagues spent a lot of money without delivering results.

“She’s added $25 trillion to our national deficit. It took us 230-some-odd years to get to $9 trillion, which is what it was when she got in office. And here we are today with owning $101,000 of national debt for every man, woman, and child in this country.”

Fraser says the spending of the last 18 years, done under presidents of both parties, turned into inflation, and now there’s a situation where many families can’t afford education, healthcare, or their grocery bills.

Fraser says fiscal issues close to home encouraged him to run but also points to foreign affairs. He says he is upset at the loss of life in Israel last October and also mentioned the three American soldiers killed in Jordan recently, along with the threat to international commerce from Houthi rebels in Yemen.
