(KNSI) – A local nonprofit is celebrating the generosity of its senior volunteers during National Mentoring Month.
The Catholic Charities Central MN Foster Grandparent Program would like to thank the 174 local volunteers who served over 72,000 hours in 2023. The mentors are area residents who are 55 and older who get involved in a child’s life to help guide them. Volunteers tutor students in classrooms at local childcare centers, preschools, Head Start, K-12 schools, and transitional programs.
According to a press release, research shows that one in three young people in the U.S. will grow up without someone to look up to. Officials say National Mentoring Month is the time of year when interest in becoming a mentor is highest. Foster grandparents receive a small stipend, training and other benefits for their service.
The AmeriCorps Seniors Program sponsors the initiative.
